Reason for choosing a front load washer:
The top-loading washer of Kenmore brand we inherited when we bought our house finally gave up. We have been doing a lot of laundry for the past 2 and half years since we got our twins. I am gestimating that our old washer was anywhere between 15-17 years old. First the dials gave in and then the clinking noise appeared. Finally the water processing stopped after which I officially pronounced this washer to be Dead. The hunt for the new washer was on .
I am somewhat of a research junkie I like to absorb as much information about the stuff I buy as possible. I hit the epinions.com looking for the best performer. After reading for a while about washers, the top loading replacement was out of the picture. When it comes to the water efficiency and quality of washing process the Front Load Washers just cannot be beaten. In addition, I liked the fire and forget option in front loaders. You preload all your detergents/liquids in a tray and let your washer do the work. No more figuring our when to add softener, bleach or detergent.
Shaking problem solved:
When I bought my LG from Home Depot I got it with optional stand. The thinking was I will not have to bend as much doing the laundry. Unfortunately as U might now know it does not work well if your laundry room floor is anything less than a concrete slab. Even though my laundry room floor is fairly stable it proved to be no match to this high RPM washer. The shaking was a bit excessive to my liking even after I have perfectly leveled it. The stand had to go back to HD. They had charged me 15% restocking fee by the way
. Lowering center of gravity helped to subdue the shaking monster to the level which I do not think is dangerous to the internal components of this washer. When the load is balanced it is barley noticeable.
Detergent problem:
Ooh well I guess it is true when people say, old dogs can not learn new tricks I have bought one battle of Tide HE Detergent (High Efficiency) but was planning to finish my old regular Detergent using 1/3 of the recommended amount. Unfortunately even after multiple lectures on difference between HE detergent and Regular detergent given to my Mother in law and our Baby Sitter they continued to use regular detergent filling loading tray compartments to the MAXIMUM. This resulted in excessive foaming to which the machine responded with low gargling noise, produced by the pump I think, during the rinsing cycle. Finally I got tired of cleaning their messes and replaced all of the old detergent boxes and bottles with HE substitutes.
Maintenance should be easy:
I can not understand why some of the people complain about odor causing mildew. The maintenance steps are not numerous and are quite easy to follow.
1. Leave the door open over night after washing cycle from time to time.
2. Wipe the rubber seal if you cant leave the door open
3. Run cleaning cycle without garments with bleach to make sure machines internal components are sanitized.
I tend to believe that if HE detergent is used in right amounts mildew/odor will not be a problem.
Overall I am very pleased with its performance. The control panel is fairly intuitive and easy to operate. Nonetheless, I still have one concern. The low rumbling noise did not completely went away after I had replaced the detergent. It starts during the rinsing cycle and is of concern to me because I tend to think that it was not there before or it should not be as loud as it is. I am planning to give LG a call in order to put my fears to rest. I will update this post once this problem is resolved.
