When my husband and I found out we were pregnant, we decided to buy a washer for our apartment in anticipation of increased baby laundry, including cloth diapers (we try to be environmentally-responsible). Also, we thought we could save money over time ($2 wash and $2 dry in our building!), and also that it would make our lives easier since the last wash in our laundry room is 8pm.

We extensively researched washing machines with the following criteria:

1. portable

2. hooks up to regular sink

3. runs on standard household 110V outlets

4. quiet

5. affordable

We considered an all-in-one washer/dryer combo, but in the end decided against it. We figured the cycles took too long to finish, and that more available features meant that more things could break on us. Also, they are really expensive. So we decided on a dedicated washer, and that we would line dry our clothes.

We purchased the Haier XQG50-GF802 at Best Buy for about $300 about a year ago. It’s small, has retractable wheels for easy portability, plugs into regular household outlets, and with the purchase of a hose adaptor from Home Depot, hooks up to our bathroom sink. The drain also empties into our bathroom sink.

There are 8 wash settings total: 4 for cotton (prewash, normal, quick, express), 3 for synthetics (normal, quick, express), and a delicates cycle. The difference between normal, quick, and express is basically just the amount of time the cycle runs. In other words, if you set the normal cycle, it will run through normal, quick, and express before the rinse and spin cycles. The prewash is an extra 20 minutes of wash with more water than normal for those really dirty loads (like dirty diapers). There is a water change before it runs through the normal-quick-express cycles. Each cycle has different water temperature settings, but the way we have our machine set up, we control the water temperature at the sink.

There are 3 dispenser compartments: one for the prewash detergent, one for wash detergent, and one for fabric softener (released in the rinse cycle).

The rinse cycle runs 4-5 water changes and really gets all the soap out. By the last rinse, there are no more suds in the drain water. The spin cycle lasts about 3 minutes, starts out slowly, and gradually speeds up to get the clothes nearly dry. And I really mean nearly dry. Having only used top-loaders in the past, this was amazing. Sheets are dry within an hour and cotton T-shirts are dry in less than 4 hours hung indoors.

To give you an idea of the load size, in one load, we typically wash 2-3 pairs of jeans, 5-6 tshirts, 5-6 pairs of socks. Probably about a week’s worth of clothing. We can also wash a queen sheet set and 2 bath towels.

At first we were a little apprehensive about the 2 hours it took to run a normal cotton cycle, but the washer is so quiet, we barely notice that it’s on in our small apartment. (It’s basically sitting about 5 feet away from our living room couch.) The loudest part is the end of the spin, which lasts for less than a minute, but isn’t usually load enough to make us turn up the TV. We usually start a load before making dinner and start a second load after dinner. Everything’s hung up before bedtime and dry by morning. Sometimes we’ll run a load overnight, and hang it up in the morning.

We’ve been very satisfied with our clothes coming out clean (even poopy diapers), and haven’t missed drying our clothes in the dryer at all. We’ve been doing about 10 loads of laundry a week for nearly a year, and haven’t experienced any problems yet. We’ve definitely recouped our original investment and are completely satisfied with our purchase.
